Overview
Why is financial competence important?
Regardless of income, 78% of US citizens are living “paycheck to paycheck.”
A Gallup poll found only about 1/3 of Americans (32%) maintain a household budget.
What’s more, nearly 25% of all Americans have no emergency savings and 16% have taken on more debt. The average American debt (per U.S. adult) is $66,772, and 77% of American households have at least some type of debt.
41% of Americans would not be able to cover a $1,000 emergency with savings.
Student loans are now the second largest slice of household debt after mortgages, bigger than credit card debt. Average college debt among student loan borrowers in America is $32,731.
One in 10 students leave college with over $10,000 in credit card debt.
